FR : Syven est un duo Finlandais né de la collaboration entre Aslak Tolonen et Andy Koski-Semmens (cf interview pour plus de détails). L’association est d’emblée prometteuse ; nous avons d’un côté le leader de Nest, grand amoureux des furets, qui lorsqu’il ne parcourt pas les forêts finlandaises sur son vélo, ne semble jamais bien loin de son kantele –l’instrument traditionnel finlandais, emblématique de tout un folklore. Et de l’autre côté Andy, un personnage avide de curiosité, toujours en perpétuel travail qui de par sa formation classique inonde cet album de sa voix hors du commun.
Parlons désormais plus amplement de cet album, qui rappelons-le est sorti le 6 décembre 2012 chez Audiokratik (leur propre label).
Depuis leur précédent album, le très bon Aikaintaite, Syven est classé dans la scène néofolk/dark ambient. Corpus Christi poursuit sur cette voie, tout en apportant sa couleur particulière. Car on sent bien qu’après le coup d’essai Aikaintaite, Syven se sent cette fois en confiance, prêt à attaquer les choses sérieuses. Sur ce nouvel album, c’est un groupe qu’on sent sûr de lui, décomplexé et, en un mot, libre. Et cette fois plus que jamais, ils ne sonnent vraiment comme personne d’autre. La thématique est annoncée dès la lecture du nom de l’album : il sera question du Christ. Cela n’en fait pas pour autant un album chrétien mais davantage un album divin, païen, qui puise son inspiration dans toutes les sources du sacré : la nature, les rituels ancestraux… Aussi il n’est pas choquant de déceler par exemple quelques touches chamaniques – les mêmes qui faisaient le charme mystique d’Aikaintaite. Pas plus que de voir cohabiter latin et gaëlique, au son du kantele.
En raison de ses thématiques, Corpus Christi, reste en accord avec le genre auquel on le rattache. Stylistiquement, les familiers de dark ambient rituel et de darkwave de tout poil ne seront pas forcément dépaysés : l’album commence par des nappes de synthé très profondes accompagnées de cloches et de percussion qui nous mettent immédiatement dans une ambiance cléricale.
L’élément incontournable et indispensable de Syven est bien évidemment l’organe vocal rare du sieur Andy qui tranche aisément avec les lignes de chant très pauvres auquel le genre nous a habitué. Honnêtement, combien d’artistes sont capables de telles prouesses vocales dans le milieu de la neofolk/dark ambient ? Un tel atout distingue assurément le duo.
Le morceau lui-même se présente comme une longue suite divisé en 4 mouvements. Nos deux comparses se sont quand même montré très ambitieux, encore une fois, en sachant alterner avec brio les passages purement ambient au kantele et les déclamations quasi grégoriennes d’Andy. Encore une fois, nous nous devons de souligner la fraicheur de la formule qui parvient admirablement à renouveler l’exercice. Personne ne chante de la sorte et le kantele n’est pas vraiment un instrument banal – kantele, qui rappelons-le ici est électrique : aucune guitare sur cet album, Aslak aime son instrument au point qu’il n’ose lui faire la moindre infidélité. Nos deux gaziers finlandais maîtrisent assurément leur exercice. On y voit une fluidité certaine et l’album ne peut s’écouter que d’une seule traite. Toute coupure y est proscrite et formellement interdite par ce blog. Quel intérêt y a-t-il à écouter des morceaux de rituel ?
Le groupe a évolué par rapport à son précédent album qui était aux frontières du metal (avec sa grosse distorsion) pour quelque chose de plus planant et apaisant avec Corpus Christi. Malgré son aspect solennel et mystique, la musique est très lumineuse comme nous le montre le clip.
Une vaste palette de sonorités est offerte à nos oreilles par le généreux Aslak, aux fourneaux pour l’occasion : Kantele classique et électrique, basse, piano, synthé, clochettes… Notons d’ailleurs que nos amis nous offrent généreusement sur la clé USB les pistes séparées de l’ensemble de ces instruments, nous permettant ainsi tous les remix les plus fous, laissant libre court à notre imagination. Concernant cette clé USB, je vous recommande chaudement son achat : elle dégueule de bonus en tout genre tels que l’ensemble des productions de Nest ainsi que le premier album de Syven pour ne citer que les meilleures parties.
En conclusion : un élément incontournable à toute bonne discothèque néofolk/dark ambient. Que vous soyez novices ou mélomane averti, cet album devra faire partie intégrante de votre meuble Ikéa plein de CD. Car oui, n’oublions pas, la musique ça s’écoute, ça s’aime et ça s’achète.

Indeed, on one side we’ve got the leader of Nest, big lover of ferrets, who, when he doesn’t ride on his bike in finnish forests, seems never too far from his kantele – the traditional finnish instrument, emblematic of a whole folklore. And on another side we’ve got Andy, a character eager of curiosity, in a perpetual work. Thanks to his classical formation, he floods this album with his uncommon voice.
Let’s talk more amply about this album, which, let us recall, has been released on December 6th 2012 on Audiokratik (their own label).
Since their last album Aikaintaite, Syven is categorized in the neofolk/dark ambient scene. This album is the good held of its predecessor, but it brings its peculiar color. It’s clear that after a first attempt, Syven now feels confident, ready to deal with serious business. On this brand new album, we hear a band full of insurance, uninhibited, and, in a word, free. More than ever, they sound like no one else. As soon as you read the title of the album, you know what we’re dealing with: The Christ. But it doesn’t make it for all that a Christian album, but rather a divine album, a pagan one that draws its inspiration from all sources of the sacred: Nature, ancestral rituals… So, it’s not chocking to discern some oriental, shamanic touches – the same which gave to Aikaintaite its mystic charm. Nor to see Gaelic verses cohabit with Latin, to the sound of the kantele.
Because of its thematic, Corpus Christi will not look odd within its genre. The regular visitors of ritual dark ambient and dark wave of all kinds will not be disoriented: the album begins with very deep layers of synth accompanied with bells and with percussion which put us immediately in a clerical atmosphere.
The unavoidable element and indispensable of Syven is obviously the rare vocal organ of Sir Andy that easily cuts with the poor lines of singing to which the genre accustomed us. Honestly, how many artists can compare to those vocal performances in the neofolk/dark ambient field? Such an asset is enough to differentiate the duo.
The piece itself appears as a long suite, divided into 4 movements. The two friends showed themselves very ambitious once again, and managed to alternate with brilliance passages purely ambient with the kantele and Andy’s almost Gregorian declamations. Once again, we have to underline the excellence of the formula, which succeeds admirably in renewing the exercise. Nobody sings like Andy, and the kantele is not really a classic instrument. Kantele, which let us recall here, is electric. Indeed there is no guitar on this album: Aslak loves his instrument so much that he does not dare to cheat on it. One can feel a certain control of the exercise from our two Finnish buddies. We see certain fluidity there, and the album can only be listened in one breath. Any cut is formally banned and forbidden it by this blog. What would be the point to listen to just a piece of ritual?
The group evolved with regard to its previous album which was for the borders of the metal (with its loud distortion) for something furthermore gliding and calming with Corpus Christi. In spite of its solemn and mystic aspect, the music is very bright as the clip shows us.
A vast pallet of tones is offered to our ears by the generous Aslak, who puts the shoulder to the wheel for the occasion: classic and electric Kantele, bass, piano, synth, bells … Let us note moreover that our friends generously offers us on the USB key the tracks runways separated from all these instruments, so permitting to us all the most crazy remixes, giving vent to our imagination. Concerning this USB key, I recommend you warmly to purchase: it overflows with bonus of all kind, such as all the productions of Nest as well as the first album of Syven.
An unavoidable element in any good neofolk / dark ambient record collection. May you be a novice or a veteran music lover, this album has to be an integral part of your IKEA shelves full of CD. Because yes, let’s not forget that music is liked, shared and bought.
