FR : Nico est probablement l’artiste la plus connue de tout ce classement. Qui a oublié son apparition magistrale avec le Velvet Underground ? Pas moi en tout cas. Ce mannequin allemand devenu chanteuse a également fait une carrière solo. Citons par exemple son album Chelsea Girl. Une voix que tous les amoureux du rock vintage se souviendront. Faites-vous plaisir et écoutez dont ce que proposait cette belle blonde lors des folles années du rock and roll.

EN : Nico is probably the most famous artist of this ranking. Who forgot her masterful appearance with the Velvet Underground ? Not me in any case. Scout Niblett

FR : A n’en point douter, Scout Niblett est une artiste incroyable et indispensable à ce classement. Chanteuse anglaise née en 1973, je l’ai pour ma part découverte avec l’album This Fool Can Die Now. Elle dégage une émotion rare. Je déconseille l’album de cet album quand vous êtes triste, parce que là ça ne saurait qu’empirer la chose. Foncez, foncez vite écouter l’ensemble de son œuvre.

EN : With no doubt, Scout Niblett is an amazing artist and essential to this grading.  English singer born in 1973, I discovered her with her album This Fool Can Die Now. She frees a rare emotion. I really disadvise you listen to this album if you’re sad because this will be worse. Hurry to listen to her works.

Sharon Van Etten

FR : Revenons à la nouvelle vague folk avec cette ravissante jeune fille née en 1981 dans le New Jersey (USA). Artiste américaine qui a tout pour plaire elle aussi. Sa voix est proche de celle d’Alela Diane, plutôt aux sonorités masculines mais elle garde toute sa féminité. Une guitare, une voix, de l’émotion = le mélange qui a marché, qui marche, et qui marchera encore pendant très longtemps. Ma recommandation (et ma découverte de l’ensemble de son œuvre) se porte vers son album Epic. On est là davantage sur une folk un peu plus rock mais c’est pas grave, on aime quand même et on partage !

EN : Let’s come back to the new wave of folk music with this lovely young woman born in 1981 in New Jersey (USA). American artist with everything needed to be liked. Her voice is close to Alela Diane’s, rather in the male tones but keeping all her feminity.  A guitar, a voice, emotion = the cocktail that has worked, that works and that will work for a long time. My recommendation goes to her album called Epic. It’s more a folk rock music but that’s okay. We like it, we share it.

Sibylle Baier

FR : Sibylle Baier est probablement l’une des artistes de folk féminines les plus vieilles que je connaisse. Mais la chose amusante à ce propos est que son premier et unique album fut édité en 2006 : The Colour Green. Elle avait créé 14 chansons dans les années 70 qu’elle n’édita qu’en 2006. Elle préféra à l’époque prendre soin de ses enfants plutôt que de s’occuper de sa carrière musicale. Sa musique sonne vraie et pure à nos oreilles. Oui, vous devez écouter cet album.

EN : Sibylle Baier is probably one of the oldest female folk artists that I know. But the fun thing about this is that her first and only album, The Colour Green, was released in 2006. She had done 14 songs in the 70’s which were finally put on CD these last years. She now lives in Massachusetts, USA but she was born in Germany. She preferred take care of her children rather than releasing her music in the 70’s. Her music sounds pure and true to our ears. Yes you have to listen to her album.

Vashti Bunyan

FR : Vashti Bunyan remporte la palme de l’artiste folk la plus ancienne parmi l’ensemble de la sélection que je vous présente. Elle sort son premier album en 1970 : Just another diamond day. Son second album sortira bien plus tard, en 2005. A l’écoute de ses chansons, vous aurez la chance de profiter d’une voix douce et fragile qui n’est pas sans rappeler celle de ma préférée : Mariee Sioux. Elle est la racine de cette nouvelle vague musicale, alors n’oublions pas ceux qui étaient là les premiers et honorons-les.

EN : Vashti Bunyan wins the palm of the oldest artist of the selection I present you. She releases her first album in 1970 : Just Another Diamond Day. Her second album will be launched a long time later, in 2005. While listening to her songs, you’ll be lucky to take advantage of a soft and fragile voice which is not without calling back Mariee Sioux’s. She is the root of this new musical wave, so please let’s not forget who the first were and let’s honor them.

Alina Hardin

FR : Alina Hardin est là encore une recommandation de ma chère Mariee Sioux. Vous avez peut être fait attention lors de la première partie de la liste qu’elle a fait une collaboration avec Alela Diane. En effet elle aussi appartient à ce groupe d’artistes de la scène californienne et ça s’entend ! Pas grand-chose à dire à son sujet, désolé, si ce n’est qu’elle aussi a sa place dans ce top. Alors, jetez donc un œil  à ses productions.

EN : Alina Hardin was recommended to me by my dear Mariee Sioux. Maybe you’ve seen in the first part of my list that she had done collaboration with Alela Diane. Indeed she’s one this group of artists from the Californian scene and that gets on! I haven’t much to tell about her, sorry, except that she has her place in this ranking. So keep an eye on her productions.

Marissa Nadler

FR : Marissa Nadler, voilà un personnage très intéressant. Marissa est une artiste qui pratique ce que nous pourrions décrire comme étant du space folk. Vous aurez l’impression d’être transporté ailleurs et loin à l’écoute de ses albums. Artiste américaine évidemment (quelle surprise !) et ravissante fille (quelle surprise également), elle reste un mystère pour moi. Je sais qu’elle est génialissime mais avec la quantité de musique que je brasse dans des styles très variés, je ne me souviens pas toujours de toutes ces perles qui se cachent dans mes dossiers. Marissa Nadler est une perle qu’il vous faut garder en tête et surtout écouter.

EN : Marissa Nadler, here is an interesting character. Marissa does what we could call space folk music. You’ll have the feeling to be transported somewhere else far and away. American artist (what a surprise) and beautiful girl (what a surprise again), she still is a mystery to me. I know she is awesome but I listen to so much music every day and in a lot of various styles that I don’t always remember all the pearls hidden in my folders. Marissa Nadler is a pearl that you have to keep in you mind and listen.

FR : Caethua est une artiste que j’ai découvert très récemment, mais quelle claque à l’écoute de son album « The Long Afternoon of Earth ». Une musique très proche de la nature nous est offerte. On reste là encore dans les codes traditionnels de la folk music féminine mais putain ça fait du bien quand même !

EN : I discovered Caethua very recently but what a musical slap I got when I listened to « The Long Afternoon of Earth ». She offers us music very close to the nature. She stays in the traditional codes of female folk music but fuck yeah this feels so good!

Joni Mitchell

FR : Joni Mitchell est probablement l’une des artistes les plus connues de cette liste. Elle en a inspiré plus d’une à se mettre à la musique folk et c’est tant mieux pour nous. Comme je le disais pour Vashti Bunyan, rendons honneur et hommage à celles qui ont ouvert la voie à une musique si belle et universelle. Elle a beaucoup d’albums à son actif, mais je vous conseillerais de commencer par l’écoute de son premier : Song to a seagull.

EN : Joni Mitchell is probably one of the oldest artists of this list. She inspired more than one to get into folk music and it is so much the better for us. As I said with Vashti Bunyan, she opened the way to a beautiful and universal music, so let’s give her back honor and tribute. Julie Doiron

FR : Julie Doiron est une enfant du rock et cela se ressent à l’écoute de ses albums qui sont moins dans la folk traditionnelle mais davantage dans le folk rock. Elle a fait ses armes avec le groupe Eric’s Trip. Artiste canadienne, elle mérite sa place également dans ce classement.

EN : Julie Doiron is child of rock music and it feels the effects. She’s less in the traditional folk but more in the folk rock music. She started with the band Eric’s Trip. Canadian artist, she also deserved her place in this ranking.

FR : Je vais finir ce classement par une note d’exotisme avec Iva Bittová, artiste tchèque et violoniste. Là, on sort complètement de la folk classique mais j’avais envie de partager avec vous cette artiste. Je ne sais pas tellement quoi dire à son sujet, mais déjà rien que le fait que je vous parle de folk music tchèque ça devrait vous motiver à être curieux !
EN : I’ll finish this ranking with a note of exostism with Iva Bittová, Czech artist and violinist. We really go out of classique folk music, but I really wanted to share with you this artist. I don’t really know what to say about her. Just the fact that I’m speaking of Czech folk music should motivate you to be a little curious.

FR : Cette liste est surtout là pour vous inviter à vous essayer à ce qui, pour moi est le top des artistes folk féminines. Je ne suis pas très doué en argumentation. Ma principale argumentation serait donc : testez et vous verrez. En grande majorité ces artistes viennent du berceau de la folk music : la Californie. Voilà pourquoi d’ailleurs, je rêve de fouler les terres californiennes pour rencontrer les artistes et futurs artistes que cet état fait grandir chaque année. Je m’excuse par avance si cet article comporte des erreurs. Il n’y a aucun classement particulier dans cette liste. Les artistes ont été placé au hasard. Mariee Sioux est cependant vraiment ma préférée d’entre toutes c’est vrai.

EN : This list has been realized to open your mind to the universe of female folk music. I’m not very good at arguing and my main argumentation would be : try it and see if you like. Most of those artists are from the cradle of folk music : California. That’s why I dream to go there one day. I’m sorry if you read some mistakes. There is no placing in this list. Artists have been put randomly in this list. However, Mariee Sioux is really my favorite above all.

Mariee Sioux

FR : Mariee Sioux est une artiste amérindienne née le 4 février 1985. De par ses racines elle propose des sonorités rares et envoutantes avec l’usage de la flûte de pan. Son père prit part à Faces In The Rocks (2007, Grass Roots Records).
Sa voix est celle d’un ange et lors de ses concerts je ne saurai que trop vous conseiller de vous laisser vous évader quelques fois en faisant le vide dans votre esprit et en fermant vos yeux. Ne les fermez pas trop longtemps car la dame est plutôt jolie et ce serait dommage de manquer ce spectacle aussi bon pour les yeux que pour les oreilles.
Ces textes font référence à la nature et à ses racines. J’ai eu la chance de la rencontrer à deux reprises et à chaque fois j’ai pu parler à une fille simple, heureuse et qui transmet sa joie de vivre et son amour de la musique que ce soit sur scène ou après le concert au court d’une petite discussion.
Elle a passé son enfance avec Alela Diane et entretiennent toujours de très bonnes relations dans la ville qui semble être le berceau d’un grand nombre d’artistes folk : Nevada City, Californie. Elle a sorti cette année son deuxième album studio (Gift for the end(2012, Almost Musique)) et la réédition de son premier album, devenu désormais une perle rare, est prévue pour février/mars 2013 chez Almost Musique. J’ai un énorme coup de cœur personnel pour cette artiste et ne saurais jamais lui montrer à quel point je l’aime. Mariee si tu me lis, en 2013 je t’invite à m’accorder une interview si tu repasses par la France (et Toulouse tout particulièrement).

Petit message à l’ensemble de mes lecteurs, je cherche depuis des années ses deux albums auto produits « Pray Me A Shadow » et  « A Bundled Bundle of Bundles ». Si l’un de vous souhaite s’en séparer, sachez que je suis hautement preneur.

She has the voice of an angel. And if you have the opportunity to attend to one of her show, just close your eyes and enjoy. Don’t close them too long cause she is also very pretty it would be a shame for you to miss that.
Her texts refer to nature and her roots. I had the chance to meet her 2 times and every time I saw a simple girl, happy and who passes happiness on to us through her music on stage or during a little conversation.
She spent her childhood with Alela Diane with who she still has a very strong relationship. They both grew in the same town that grew a lot of very good artists : Nevada City, California. She released her second studio album, Gift for the end (2012, Almost musique), this year and the rerelease of her first one, which is now quite hard to find, is planned for february/march 2013 at Almost Musique. I really have a huge crush on this artist and wouldn’t know how to show her how much I love her. Mariee if you’re reading me, please let me make a live interview when you’ll come back in France (especially Toulouse).

Alela Diane

FR : Restons encore à Nevada City et parlons cette fois-ci d’Alela Diane née le 20 avril 1983. Comme indiqué précédemment elle est la grande amie d’enfance de Mariee Sioux. Alela a une voix moins douce que Mariee mais n’est pas pour autant moins douée que son amie. J’ai eu la chance d’assister à un concert d’Alela Diane et de la rencontrer quelques minutes.

EN : Let’s stay in Nevada City and let’s talk about Alela Diane now. She was born on april 20^th of 1983. She’s friend with Mariee Sioux since their childhood as I said earlier. Alela has a less softer voice than Mariee but she is not less talented. I had the chance to meet Alela once in a show she gave in Toulouse (France).

Joanna Newsom

FR : A l’inverse des artistes mentionnées précédemment et malgré le fait qu’elle aussi soit de Nevada City (née le 18 janvier 1982), Joanna Newsom joue de la harpe et non pas de la guitare. La première chose qui vous frappe à l’écoute de ses albums (pour ma part je l’ai connue grâce à The Milk-Eyed Mender) c’est sa voix vraiment hors du commun. Au premier abord, les puristes seraient tentés de passer leur chemin, mais ce serait faire là une grave erreur. Laissez sa chance à cette grande artiste de vous montrer l’étendue de son talent.

EN : Unless the previous artists and despite the fact that she’s from Nevada City too, Joanna Newsom doesn’t play guitar but she plays harp. She was born on January 18^th of 1982. She has a very uncommon voice that you can easily hear while listening to The Milk-Eyed Tender for example. It’s with this album that I heard of her for the first time. Please give her a chance to blow your mind, because she’s truly talented.

Pamela Wyn Shannon

FR : Pamela Wyn Shannon est née dans le Massachusetts et est désormais une résidente Galloise. Elle a également fait un passage par la France. Félicitons-la au passage pour son récent accouchement. Pamela est avec Mariee Sioux l’une des premières artistes folk féminines que j’ai connues et à ce titre elle a une place très particulière dans mon cœur. Peu active mais pas pour autant moins talentueuse elle a plusieurs albums à son actif dont le génialissime Courting Autumn. Des chansons en anglais ou en gaëlique y sont proposées. A écouter en forêt ou pour se détendre, cet album est vraiment très apaisant et la voix de Pamela me fait frissonner à chaque réécoute de son album.

EN : Pamela Wyn Shannon was born in Massachuetts and lives now in Wales. She also lived in France some years ago. By the way, let’s congratulate for her recent child birth. Pamela is with Marie Sioux one of the first female folk artists I’e known so she has a very particular place in my heart. Not very active but not less talented she has several albums including the marvelous Courting Autumn. It contains songs in English and Gaelic. To listen in the forest or to relax, this album is very soothing and Pamela’s voice makes me shiver at every listening.

Kacey Johansing

FR : Kacey Johansing est une artiste qui m’a été recommandée par Mariee Sioux quand je ne trouvais vraiment plus mon bonheur dans la scène folk féminine (oui oui rien que ça !). On sort des sentiers battus classiques avec cette artiste puisque ce n’est plus la petite artiste seule sur sa chaise avec sa guitare et sa voix mais nous avons affaire ici à une artiste folk et pop. Le plus important pour moi chez une artiste féminine c’est la voix et ici elle est au rendez-vous. Alors laissez-vous tenter par cette jeune fille.

EN : Kacey Johansing is a recommendation given to me by Mariee Sioux herself when I didn’t find any new artist in the female folk scene. She’s not really into the true folk music but more in the folk and pop sounds. The most important to me for a female singer is the voice, and believe me there’s a voice here. So give a chance to this young girl.

Peggy Honeywell

FR : Peggy Honeywell est une artiste américaine provenant de Philadelphie et vivant désormais à San Francisco. Très peu d’infos à son sujet semblent disponibles sur internet. Elle pose sa voix sur des rythmes de guitare très country. On ressent beaucoup d’émotion au travers de sa voix. A tester sans hésiter.

FR : Là aussi je n’ai trouvé que peu d’informations. Il semblerait que le projet The Red Heroine soit mort et que désormais elle se penche davantage sur sa nouvelle formation Thick wild. Elle a connu beaucoup de noms de scènes mais à chaque fois c’est une fille à la voix rare et hors du commun qui hypnotisait nos sens. Artiste américaine encore une fois, je vous recommande chaudement de prêter une oreille attentive à cette artiste qui à n’en pas douter rejoint les déesses de la folk music féminine. Et la cerise sur le gâteau c’est qu’Amelia est une fille extrêmement ravissante. 😉

EN : Here again, very few information are available. It seems that the project The Red Heroine is dead and that she works on her new band: Thick Wild. She had several stage names but every time there was a girl with a rare voice hypnotizing our senses.
