Au menu du jour : Danger, artiste électro français qui a toujours des noms d’albums et de pistes musicales à la con. Bien que particulièrement mauvais en idées de noms de chansons il compense TRES largement avec ses productions.
Avant de juger sa production artistique, attardons-nous quelques secondes sur la pochette de l’album qui reflète ma foi particulièrement bien l’ambiance de l’album. Ce masque à l’allure post-apocalyptique et légèrement cassé avec ses yeux blancs vitreux nous fait dire que vous allez collapser comme des bâtards c’est moi qui vous le dis. J’interprète le feuillage autour comme un désir de sortir des ténèbres. Oui ici les ténèbres sont forestières.
Bon voilà maintenant que je vous ai décrit la pochette, attaquons le gros du morceau. Ouais d’ailleurs, Mr Danger, j’aurais aimé qu’il soit gros ce morceau putain de merde. 18 minutes ça fait chier, on n’a pas le temps de rentrer dans le truc qu’on en ressort déjà. Ouais ouais je sais c’est un EP blablabla, bah c’est con.
Comme me l’a fait si bien remarquer un ami, cet EP pourrait très largement être la bande originale d’un projet de science-fiction / post-apocalyptique. Et le post-apo c’est le bien. Dans la vie y a le houmous puis la bière puis le post apocalyptique.
Je pense que pour pleinement apprécier cet album, il y a des conditions particulières d’écoute qui sont requises :
– Un système son vraiment gros et qui envoie du lourd
– Etre sous influence de l’alcool ou de substances moins légales (attention c’est dangereux pour la santé)
– Etre dans le noir ou un lieu peu éclairé mais avec des stroboscopes et autres jeux de lumières.
– > En gros il faut être dans un club entouré de dizaines d’autres mélomanes.
Tout ceci s’explique par le fait que c’est une musique très deep, sombre, rythmée, émotionnellement prenante. Au cours de l’écoute on voit le monde s’écrouler autour de nous, c’est majestueux.
On today’s menu: danger, French electro artist who always has lame names of albums and tracks. Although particularly bad in naming songs he compensates VERY largely with his productions.
Before judging his artistic production, let us linger a few seconds over the coever of the album which reflects to me particularly good well the atmosphere of the album. This post-apocalyptic look mask and slightly broken with void eyes makes us say that you’re going to collapse a lot, it is me who tell it to you. I interpret the foliage all around as a desire to goint out of darkness. Yes here the darkness is forest.
Well now that I described you the cover, let us attack the main part of the piece. 18 minutes, it’s short, we do not have time to go into it that we already go out again from it. Yeah yeah I know it is an EP blah blah blah, well it sucks.
As so well pointed out it to me a friend, this EP could very widely be the soundtrack of a project of science fiction / post-apocalyptic. And post-apo is good shit. In life there’s hummus then beer then post-apocalyptic.
I think that to appreciate completely this album, there are particular conditions of listening which are required:
– A really huge sound system
– To be under the influence of alcohol or less legal substances (attention it is dangerous)
– Be in the dark or a little lit place but with stroboscopes and other lighting effects.
– > Yeah that describes a club surrounded with tens of other music lovers.
All this is explained by the fact that it is a music very deep, dark, rhythmical, emotionally fascinating. During the listening we see the world collapsing around us, it is majestic.
FR : Nest est un groupe finlandais désormais en standby (et je prie tous les jours pour un retour de ce groupe). On retrouve un duo au sein de ce groupe Aslak Tolonen (autrement dit mon idole) que nous connaissons désormais pour ses projets dans Syven et T. Saxell. Ce n’est pas UN groupe de neofolk, c’est LE groupe de neofolk. A mes yeux, il n’y a pas plus neofolk que ce groupe. Une neofolk particulièrement rare car réalisée avec l’instrument traditionnel finlandais, le kantele.
Fabled Lore est la démo du groupe gravée par les artistes eux-mêmes en 2000.
Hidden Stream est un split avec Isafjord sorti en 2001 chez Corvus Records. Album très très très très rare à trouver.
Woodsmoke en 2003. Deux versions : une regular et une limited à 99 exemplaires (et je cherche toujours cette limited edition).
Last Vestige of Old Joy en vinyl split avec Agalloch en 2004. Malheureusement je n’ai pas encore ce vinyl car il coûte assez cher.
Trail of the Unwary en 2007 là aussi avec deux versions : regular et limited 99 (et si quelqu’un se sépare de sa version limited, s’il vous plait, faites moi signe).
Le meilleur album du groupe est selon moi Hidden Stream, mais je ne suis pas particulièrement objectif pour le coup car c’est un des tous premiers albums de neofolk que j’ai écouté dans ma vie et j’ai écouté cet album des dizaines de fois. Album proche de la nature, très calme et apaisant.
Dans le même esprit on retrouve Woodsmoke là encore album proche de la nature et méditatif.
Trail of the unwary est plus sombre mais tout aussi magnifique, ce qui a amené à la création de Syven, comme expliqué dans l’interview de Syven.
Je n’ai pas d’autres mots à dire que l’ensemble de l’oeuvre de Nest est un pur chef d’oeuvre.
EN : Nest is a Finnish band from now on standby (and I pray every day for a return of this band). We find a duet within this group Aslak Tolonen (in other words my idol) which we know from now on for its projects in Syven and T. Saxell. It is not A group of neofolk , it is THE group of neofolk. For me, there is no more neofolk there than this band. A neofolk music particularly rare because realized with the Finn traditional instrument, the kantele.

The best album of the group is according to me Hidden Stream, but I am not particularly objective this time because it is one of the first neofolk albums which I listened to in my life and I listened to this album dozens of times. Close album of nature, very quiet and soothing.
In the same spirit we find Woodsmoke even there close album of natural and meditative.
Trail of the unwary is darker but so magnificent, what brought to the creation of Syven, as explained in the interview of Syven.
I have no other words to say that the whole work of Nest is a pure masterpiece.
FR : Chers amis, je voudrais vous parler d’un petit label qui peine à se faire connaître mais qui mériterait davantage de notoriété. EgoTwister Records est un label tenu par Yan à Angers et fondé en 2004. Il y propose la musique qui lui plait et qui est surtout faite par des personnes qui lui plaisent et avec qui il se sent proche. On peut par exemple citer Gratuit que vous avez pu voir plusieurs semaines auparavant lors d’une interview qu’il m’avait accordé à Toulouse. On y rencontrera surtout de la musique electro mais peu conventionnelle. Je ne saurais que trop vous conseiller de vous essayer aux compilations Party Ruiners vol 1-4. Vous pouvez d’ailleurs retrouver le volume 2 sur ma chaîne Youtube ou en profiter avec une meilleure qualité sur le site d’EgoTwister en écoute libre et illimitée via bandcamp. FR : Syven est un duo Finlandais né de la collaboration entre Aslak Tolonen et Andy Koski-Semmens (cf interview pour plus de détails). L’association est d’emblée prometteuse ; nous avons d’un côté le leader de Nest, grand amoureux des furets, qui lorsqu’il ne parcourt pas les forêts finlandaises sur son vélo, ne semble jamais bien loin de son kantele –l’instrument traditionnel finlandais, emblématique de tout un folklore. Et de l’autre côté Andy, un personnage avide de curiosité, toujours en perpétuel travail qui de par sa formation classique inonde cet album de sa voix hors du commun.
Parlons désormais plus amplement de cet album, qui rappelons-le est sorti le 6 décembre 2012 chez Audiokratik (leur propre label).
Depuis leur précédent album, le très bon Aikaintaite, Syven est classé dans la scène néofolk/dark ambient. Corpus Christi poursuit sur cette voie, tout en apportant sa couleur particulière. Car on sent bien qu’après le coup d’essai Aikaintaite, Syven se sent cette fois en confiance, prêt à attaquer les choses sérieuses. Sur ce nouvel album, c’est un groupe qu’on sent sûr de lui, décomplexé et, en un mot, libre. Et cette fois plus que jamais, ils ne sonnent vraiment comme personne d’autre. La thématique est annoncée dès la lecture du nom de l’album : il sera question du Christ. Cela n’en fait pas pour autant un album chrétien mais davantage un album divin, païen, qui puise son inspiration dans toutes les sources du sacré : la nature, les rituels ancestraux… Aussi il n’est pas choquant de déceler par exemple quelques touches chamaniques – les mêmes qui faisaient le charme mystique d’Aikaintaite. Pas plus que de voir cohabiter latin et gaëlique, au son du kantele.
En raison de ses thématiques, Corpus Christi, reste en accord avec le genre auquel on le rattache. Stylistiquement, les familiers de dark ambient rituel et de darkwave de tout poil ne seront pas forcément dépaysés : l’album commence par des nappes de synthé très profondes accompagnées de cloches et de percussion qui nous mettent immédiatement dans une ambiance cléricale.
L’élément incontournable et indispensable de Syven est bien évidemment l’organe vocal rare du sieur Andy qui tranche aisément avec les lignes de chant très pauvres auquel le genre nous a habitué. Honnêtement, combien d’artistes sont capables de telles prouesses vocales dans le milieu de la neofolk/dark ambient ? Un tel atout distingue assurément le duo.
Le morceau lui-même se présente comme une longue suite divisé en 4 mouvements. Nos deux comparses se sont quand même montré très ambitieux, encore une fois, en sachant alterner avec brio les passages purement ambient au kantele et les déclamations quasi grégoriennes d’Andy. Encore une fois, nous nous devons de souligner la fraicheur de la formule qui parvient admirablement à renouveler l’exercice. Personne ne chante de la sorte et le kantele n’est pas vraiment un instrument banal – kantele, qui rappelons-le ici est électrique : aucune guitare sur cet album, Aslak aime son instrument au point qu’il n’ose lui faire la moindre infidélité. Nos deux gaziers finlandais maîtrisent assurément leur exercice. On y voit une fluidité certaine et l’album ne peut s’écouter que d’une seule traite. Toute coupure y est proscrite et formellement interdite par ce blog. Quel intérêt y a-t-il à écouter des morceaux de rituel ?
Le groupe a évolué par rapport à son précédent album qui était aux frontières du metal (avec sa grosse distorsion) pour quelque chose de plus planant et apaisant avec Corpus Christi. Malgré son aspect solennel et mystique, la musique est très lumineuse comme nous le montre le clip.
Une vaste palette de sonorités est offerte à nos oreilles par le généreux Aslak, aux fourneaux pour l’occasion : Kantele classique et électrique, basse, piano, synthé, clochettes… Notons d’ailleurs que nos amis nous offrent généreusement sur la clé USB les pistes séparées de l’ensemble de ces instruments, nous permettant ainsi tous les remix les plus fous, laissant libre court à notre imagination. Concernant cette clé USB, je vous recommande chaudement son achat : elle dégueule de bonus en tout genre tels que l’ensemble des productions de Nest ainsi que le premier album de Syven pour ne citer que les meilleures parties.
En conclusion : un élément incontournable à toute bonne discothèque néofolk/dark ambient. Que vous soyez novices ou mélomane averti, cet album devra faire partie intégrante de votre meuble Ikéa plein de CD. Car oui, n’oublions pas, la musique ça s’écoute, ça s’aime et ça s’achète.
EN : Syven is a finnish duo, born from the collaboration between Aslak Tolonen and Andy Koski-Semmens (cf interview for more details). The association is promising at first sight. Indeed, on one side we’ve got the leader of Nest, big lover of ferrets, who, when he doesn’t ride on his bike in finnish forests, seems never too far from his kantele – the traditional finnish instrument, emblematic of a whole folklore. And on another side we’ve got Andy, a character eager of curiosity, in a perpetual work. Thanks to his classical formation, he floods this album with his uncommon voice.
Let’s talk more amply about this album, which, let us recall, has been released on December 6th 2012 on Audiokratik (their own label).
Since their last album Aikaintaite, Syven is categorized in the neofolk/dark ambient scene. This album is the good held of its predecessor, but it brings its peculiar color. It’s clear that after a first attempt, Syven now feels confident, ready to deal with serious business. On this brand new album, we hear a band full of insurance, uninhibited, and, in a word, free. More than ever, they sound like no one else. As soon as you read the title of the album, you know what we’re dealing with: The Christ. But it doesn’t make it for all that a Christian album, but rather a divine album, a pagan one that draws its inspiration from all sources of the sacred: Nature, ancestral rituals… So, it’s not chocking to discern some oriental, shamanic touches – the same which gave to Aikaintaite its mystic charm. Nor to see Gaelic verses cohabit with Latin, to the sound of the kantele.
Because of its thematic, Corpus Christi will not look odd within its genre. The regular visitors of ritual dark ambient and dark wave of all kinds will not be disoriented: the album begins with very deep layers of synth accompanied with bells and with percussion which put us immediately in a clerical atmosphere.
The unavoidable element and indispensable of Syven is obviously the rare vocal organ of Sir Andy that easily cuts with the poor lines of singing to which the genre accustomed us. Honestly, how many artists can compare to those vocal performances in the neofolk/dark ambient field? Such an asset is enough to differentiate the duo.
The piece itself appears as a long suite, divided into 4 movements. The two friends showed themselves very ambitious once again, and managed to alternate with brilliance passages purely ambient with the kantele and Andy’s almost Gregorian declamations. Once again, we have to underline the excellence of the formula, which succeeds admirably in renewing the exercise. Nobody sings like Andy, and the kantele is not really a classic instrument. Kantele, which let us recall here, is electric. Indeed there is no guitar on this album: Aslak loves his instrument so much that he does not dare to cheat on it. One can feel a certain control of the exercise from our two Finnish buddies. We see certain fluidity there, and the album can only be listened in one breath. Any cut is formally banned and forbidden it by this blog. What would be the point to listen to just a piece of ritual?
The group evolved with regard to its previous album which was for the borders of the metal (with its loud distortion) for something furthermore gliding and calming with Corpus Christi. In spite of its solemn and mystic aspect, the music is very bright as the clip shows us.
A vast pallet of tones is offered to our ears by the generous Aslak, who puts the shoulder to the wheel for the occasion: classic and electric Kantele, bass, piano, synth, bells … Let us note moreover that our friends generously offers us on the USB key the tracks runways separated from all these instruments, so permitting to us all the most crazy remixes, giving vent to our imagination. Concerning this USB key, I recommend you warmly to purchase: it overflows with bonus of all kind, such as all the productions of Nest as well as the first album of Syven.
An unavoidable element in any good neofolk / dark ambient record collection. May you be a novice or a veteran music lover, this album has to be an integral part of your IKEA shelves full of CD. Because yes, let’s not forget that music is liked, shared and bought.

Je ne suis pas très doué en argumentation comme indiqué précédemment, mais soyez sûrs que si j’écris quelques lignes à propos d’un album, cela signifie qu’il vaut le coup d’être écouté. Commençons donc avec un groupe espagnol.
Pour moi, il est très important d’indiquer que ce groupe est espagnol car le genre de musique qu’il propose est particulièrement rare dans ce pays. En général on trouve ces sonorités du côté des pays d’Europe de l’est.
Parlons donc de cet album et du concept qu’il y a derrière. Nuclear Sun est un album qui parle de l’accident de Tchernobyl. Tout l’album est à la fois triste et poétique. Une chose importante à regarder à l’écoute de cet album c’est la liste des titres des chansons qui sont vraiment très en accord avec la musique. On peut classer cet album dans les catégories neoclassique, martial et industriel. Nuclear Sun ne peut pas s’écouter à n’importe quel moment et vous devez donc être prêt pour son écoute. Etant donné qu’il est à la fois triste et poétique, videz votre esprit et soyez prêts à être transportés ailleurs.
Quand j’écoute ce chef d’oeuvre, je me sens sincèrement à Tchernobyl. Et les albums qui vous vont sentir quelque part ailleurs sont assez rareres. Celui ci en fait partie.
Comme tous les albums de Der Blaue Reiter, Nuclear Sun commence par une musique classique mais par la suite on y trouve des productions propres à Der Blaue Reiter.
Alors partons tous pour Tchernobyl !
EN : Hi and welcome to my new concept. I’ll try to put daily a quick review about albums that I like. I’m not really good at arguing as I said, but make sure that if I write a couple of lines about an album it means that you really should listen to it. Let’s start with a spanish band.
To me it’s very important to tell that this band is Spanish, because you’ll hear really rarely this kind of music from this country. Usually it’s more from eastern Europe.
So let’s talk about this album and the concept there is behind it. Nuclear Sun is an album talking about the accident of Tchernobyl. All the album is very sad but also so poetic. There’s one thing you need to do while listening to this album is to take a look at the titles of the songs, they are really important. This album can be put in those categories : neoclassical, martial and industrial. You need to be prepared to listen to Nuclear Sun. You can’t listen to it anytime you want. As it’s quite sad and poetic, empty your mind and get ready to be transported somewhere else.When I listen to this masterpiece, I sincerely feel I’m at Tchernobyl. Albums that make you feel somewhere else are rare. And this one is one of them.
All of Der Blaue Reiter’s albums start with a classical music but the rest of their song are from their own production.
So let’s all go to Tchernobyl now !
